Manbiwi
(i)wi comes from gawi water.
madda
- Nharangga appears to have another word for knee. In old Nharangga, madda may have meant kneecap (supported by related language records).- people now use madda as the general word.
Madjidju
- this word probably developed from a longer word in the past - perhaps madju-madju (supported also by related language records).
Maggiwarda
- the English name Maitland apparently does not come from Nharangga at all, but is said to be named after a relative of Governor Fergusson. (Pioneer Printers)- Tindale suggests the version Maddliwartu as referring to flint (mardi), but this interpretation seems to rely on related language records.- some elders say maggi refers to a source of wine. Others say the word refers to a waterhole - this is not the literal meaning of the word but might be a description of the place.- related languages include Kaurna, Nukunu and Ngadjuri.
